philosophic view on visual merchandising
I believe Visual Merchandising is very important in the retail business. Visual Merchandising inspires shoppers and they way they dress in their day-to-day life. It can also add an excitement to shopping that would other wise be absent. Visual Merchandising attracts the attention of potential customers and lets them see the merchandise in a new and different way. It allows stores to become creative with their merchandise and it shows customer’s new trends, as well as new ways to put outfits together. I think some of the most important things visual merchandisers can do when displaying their merchandise is using props. Whether it be, functional props or decorative props, I believe they are very important. Functional props add new creative ways of holding merchandise. And decorative props are items used to create a mood or emphasize the theme of the display. Props can add a lot to any display and I have found them very useful while creating and designing displays. Another very important aspect of visual merchandising is the use of signage. Visual merchandisers use signage as a way to inform their customers about sales, new trends, as well as many other things. I think signage is a great way to inform the customers and is very important in visual displays. I believe these two things are very critical to a successful visual display.

stepping into style
The title of this display was “Stepping into Style.” The objective of this display was to give people a look into accessories. Specifically shoes. I think often times shoes get over looked as just being a necessity and aren’t really appreciated. This display showed our audience several different types of shoes and accessories. As well as different ways to pair them with spring/autumn dresses. Our main objective could be to attract customers to the idea of accessories playing a bigger role in your every day-to-day attire. In this display we used several different display techniques. The first one being our functional props. In this display our functional props are the forms, which are holding merchandise as well as the stairs build from foam board displaying our shoes. Another display technique we used was a decorative prop. The deer head in the middle served as a prop to create a mood and emphasize our creative theme. As well as being functional and holding merchandise such as bracelets and necklaces too. Because our display was just inside the AT building we didn’t necessarily have competition. However if you were to compare our display with the other group’s displays around us you would see that our display was aimed much more toward the masses, a very everyday and doable style. Where as their windows were aimed toward perhaps fashion innovators or trend setters.

dancing in the rain
The title of this display was “Dancing in the Rain.” The objective of this display was to give new upcoming trends for the future rainy season. We wanted to educate our customers (or fellow students) about raingear because it has a large presence on campus. Raincoats as well as rain boots are definitely a staple for a college student and there are many ways to make your look more stylish while still being practical. Many techniques in this display. We used the direction of lighting to display our merchandise better. The jacket in the front has crossbeams allowing for better coverage of light and a better look at the garment. We also utilized fish line to hold up our raindrops as well as our cloud to create a sense of quality and make it look more lifelike. We used the display technique of stuffing, in our boots to give them a 3-D form and allow the customer to see how they would look while on the body. Our display compared to our competitors (or other classmates) was very different. Most of them focused on the beginning of the cold weather, putting up displays on dressing warm and cozy. Whereas our display seemed to prove much more prominent to the time, since it rained for the next 2 weeks.. to top it off
The name of this display was “To top it off.” The object of this display was to inform the customer about old styles and trends from the past. We hoped to initiate a spark in people as they walked by, so that after they saw our display they would want to maybe do a little bit of research on their own to find out what hats are all about and how they began. We also wanted to show of some of the great things the Beeman offered, because usually no one ever gets to see or appreciate them. So we thought this would be the perfect opportunity to do so. In this display we used techniques like attracting attention, appealing to emotions, decorative props, and signage to really create the best display possible. We attracted attention by creating a display that was very simple and had never been done before. It evoked emotion in the customers that walked by because it appealed to their nostalgic side and made them long for the past. The decorative props we used as statement and information pieces as well. Using the hatboxes emphasized the theme of our display and really related it back to the past. Our signage gave our customer the idea of what our display was about and how hats have really “topped” everything off throughout time. Our competition’s (other classmates) displays were all based around Halloween themes because of the time of year. Their themes did fit very well with the time, but our display stood out more and received many compliments on being different and unique. time for toms
This display name/theme is “Time for Toms.” In this display we hoped to increase the sales of Toms. We also hoped to attract customers to the inside of the store with this display table. As well as educate the customers about Toms new items and trends they have for the upcoming winter season. One major display technique we used in this design was the fan radial format. We laid the shoes out in a fan type look. This allowed more merchandise to put viewed on the display table and for certain types of shoes to be placed together. We also propped up some of the shoes on stands or shoe holders in order to create level changes and make the merchandise in the back more noticeable. When comparing our display to our competitors I would say ours held up very nicely. The arrangement of our display added a sense of gaze or motion control that lead the consumers eye from right to left and around the shoes. It looked professional as well as fresh and exciting. We followed the rules given by Toms to keep certain styles, types, or colors together and it look very good if not better than our competitors. This display was done at Trade Home Shoes. Trade Home Shoes is located in the Muncie Mall at 3501 N. Grandville, Muncie, Indiana 47304. The contact person for this store is the Manager, Scott Fisher. His contact number is 286-0687.
